The Black Business Association celebrates
National African American Heritage Month

The Black Business Association (BBA), the oldest ethnic business organization in the State of California, will commemorate Black History Month by presenting its Annual Awards Dinner on Thursday, February 28, 2019, at the California African American Museum, 600 State Dr, Los Angeles, CA 90037. Reception begins at 6:00 PM, Awards Dinner at 7:00 PM and Dessert Reception from 9-10 PM.

In recognition of African American Heritage Month's 2019 Theme: "Black Migrations,” this event salutes Black entrepreneurs who paved the way for today’s success stories. Men and women working towards creating the American dream for Black entrepreneurs around the world. As one of the oldest active minority business organizations in the state of California, the BBA has been instrumental in the incubation and development of thousands of African American‐owned businesses, assisting them in moving up the entrepreneurship ladder of success, and thus creating a countless number of jobs in urban and underserved communities.

The Black Business Association is proud to announce its 2019 Honorees

Danny Bakewell Sr.Danny J. Bakewell Sr. will receive an Outstanding Recognition Award.

Mr. Bakewell has been a true civil rights activist for the betterment of African Americans throughout the greater Los Angeles area and the nation. Bakewell is a founding member, current board Chairman and former President and Chief Executive Officer of The Brotherhood Crusade, a Los Angeles-based civil rights and community development organization. In his 35 years leading the organization, the Brotherhood Crusade grew to become one of the largest non-profit organizations in Southern California. It annually distributes over $65 million in grants and technical support to small local non-profits in the African American community of South Los Angeles.

Danny is currently the Executive Publisher/CEO of the Los Angeles Sentinel, the oldest and largest Black-owned newspaper on the West Coast and nation’s Number One Black Newspaper, Bakewell created “Taste of Soul,” which in its 14 years is considered the largest African American theme street family festivals in the nation. Danny is also the Chairman of The Bakewell Company; one of the largest African American-owned development companies in the country as well as the Chairman and Meredith of the National Newspaper Publisher Association. Bakewell has led multi-million-dollar revitalization efforts in the cities of Los Angeles, Compton, Pasadena, Seaside, and other California communities. As a developer, Bakewell has breathed economic life into communities when few had the vision, tenacity, or belief in these areas or the residents that lived there.
Carl DickersonCarl Dickerson will receive the Outstanding Recognition Award.

Carl Dickerson the founder of Dickerson Insurance Services began his career in the life insurance industry over 50 years ago and quickly realized his passion laid in the health benefits arena. Since recently merging and becoming an Alera partner firm, Dickerson now has access to the experiences, tools and knowledge of some of the nation’s best firms and people in the industry. Dickerson states, “Neither our company culture nor our staff has changed; we will operate just as we always have, but with enhanced capabilities to help us grow as our brokers grow.”
Bernard and Shirley KinseyBernard & Shirley Kinsey will receive an Outstanding Recognition Awards.

The Kinsey’s have been called "one of the most admired and respected couples in Los Angeles." Bernard and Shirley are known for their collection of African American art, books and manuscripts that document and tell the story of African American triumphs and struggles from 1604 to the present. Bernard and Shirley Kinsey have focused much of their attention on The Kinsey Collection, their national touring museum exhibit of African American art and history. The collection was on display at the Smithsonian National Museum of American History in Washington, DC and has been on a national tour in a partnership with Wells Fargo.
Gwen MooreGwen Moore will receive an Outstanding Recognition Award, for her commitment to the African American Community; Gwen is the eponymy of a Phenomenal Woman.

Gwen Moore served in the California State assembly for 16 years. As an Assemblywoman, she developed legislative and political strategies on a variety of issues such as diversity in procurement, taxation and international trade, consumer affairs, business and labor issues.

As Founder and Chief Executive Officer of GeM Communications Group, Ms. Moore is the primary consultant, working with clients to develop and implement public affairs, legislative strategies and community outreach programs. Ms. Moore develops grassroots lobbying efforts, advises a client on legislative and regulatory issues and helps develop solutions to problems. She serves on numerous local and national boards including California State Bar Board of Trustees, and The California Small Business Association. She serves on the National Board of the NAACP and is First Vice President of the California State Conference of the NAACP, Vice Chair CA Utility Diversity Council, President Emeritus of The Future PAC and Chairwoman of The Black Business Association, among others.
